AM Northwest appearance

I was a guest on AM Northwest yesterday. I haven’t been on television since I was 5 when I went on the Romper Room show. I was very excited but also pretty nervous. Many friends emailed or called me with advice and suggestions. I was really grateful. Despite the incredible butterflies, it was a great experience.

925) My friend who’d had surgery last week had another friend coming to town yesterday to help her. She was flying in and she called to see if I could pick her up at the airport. It was a horrible rainy day but the company of this new acquaintance made it all worth it. We chatted the entire way and it was such a pleasure. I love people so making a new friend is always a delight.

926) Held the door at the television station for a gentleman bringing in some kind of camera equipment in both hands.

927) My daughter and I volunteered to make Hamantaschen at our synagogue. If you haven’t ever heard of the Jewish holiday of Purim we celebrate it each March. One of the symbols of the holiday is triangular shaped cookies called a Hamantashen. For more than 30 years, men and women in my synagogue have gathered to make, bake and sell these cookies as a fundraiser. It is incredibly labor intensive but also an amazing community event. Many, many people volunteer large amounts of time and ingredients to produce the cookies. My daughter really wanted to join me this year and I felt she was old enough now to come along. Some of the older women told her she did a better job than I did shaping the cookies. She loved that.

636) Volunteered to help out with the Cookie Dough delivery for our school. Harder physical work than I had imagined.

637) Volunteered to pick up some garden product for our upcoming plant sale.

638) In Judaism, during our spring holiday of Purim we make gifts for others and deliver them. These are suppose to be gifts that include three different kinds of food that would have several different blessings said over them (Jews say a blessing for different foods before they were eaten). My kids and I have done this together since my daughter was an infant. Each year they are excited to get the food (usually it includes a juice box, peanut butter sandwich crackers, hamantaschen the traditional triangle shaped cookie and some kind of chocolate). We assembled them one weekend day and on the day before Purim we delivered them after school together. They are fun to give especially when you get to leave them as a surprise for someone. I hope my kids will grow up and do this with their kids since I have always loved this custom.

639) Today at the Purim celebration, there was a small child probably around 3 who was lost and crying for his father. I helped him locate his dad and the look on the child’s face when we had found his father was priceless.

640) Last week, my husband and I decided last minute after dinner to go to the gym for some exercise. We made our plans quickly and he left first and I was going to join him about 1/2 hour later so that I could attend an evening yoga class. There was likely going to be about 10-15 minutes when neither of us could be with the kids so we had planned to let them sit in the ladies room in the lounge area where they could view on of their favorite cables shows (we don’t get cable at home). A trainer from the gym was in the locker room and told my son he was too old to be in there. I was getting ready to go to my class and was furious when I heard this and was very rude and nasty when I spoke with her. I told her I would take responsibility if anyone complained and left my kids so I could start my class. They were instructed to meet Daddy in 15 minutes outside the locker rooms. I was so distracted during yoga and had a hard time meditating because I felt so bad about how I had treated this other person. As soon as the class ended, I found her and apologized. I told her I knew I had handled myself poorly and was embarrassed at my behavior. She forgave me and even offered to help in the future if we ever found ourselves with a small window and no place for my son. I guess even when we do something inappropriate we can learn from our mistakes and say we are sorry.

Hamantaschen Mitzvahs

For more than 30 years, men and women in my synagogue have gathered to make, bake and sell these cookies as a fundraiser. It is incredibly labor intensive but also an amazing community event. Many, many people volunteer large amounts of time and ingredients to produce the cookies. I hadn’t volunteered for this event in several years, mostly because I had small children so it wasn’t easy to get there, but this year I decided to go and join. It was hard work but I felt so great being part of the community and helping make “some” of the dozens of cookies we made that day. My kids were so excited that afternoon when I picked them up after school with cookies in tow, my daughter wanted to know if these were the ones that I made. Actually they weren’t but she still thought they were delicious. I hope to take my daughter back again before the three week event is over. By the way, if you have never had a Hamantaschen I highly recommend them.

610) Held the door for someone carrying a large load today.

611) Donated some several used puzzles today that my kids have outgrown to the pre-kindergarten class at our school. The teacher was happy to get them.

612) Sent a thank you note to a local dentist who did some work a week ago on my very apprehensive daughter. The dentist was INCREDIBLY patient and kind and it was a very good experience for my daughter. I wanted to let her know.

613) Sent a small Starbucks gift card to a acquaintance to acknowledge her birthday. I called it a “liquid hug”. (I had received one myself from a client earlier in the year.)

614) Referred an acquaintance looking for a skin specialist to one I knew.

615) A mom of my son’s friend needed to rearrange a play date for some health reasons. I was thrilled to help out and still be able to keep the play date as scheduled.

Saw someone do a mitzvah today at the gym, one of the fitness instructors was checking in with a member and she was saying she was so hot. The instructor carried over a fan and plugged it in to help the member cool off. I thought that was very kind.

Received a wonderful compliment today that kept me smiling all morning long.
