Happy Birthday Dad and first 100 mitzvahs!

Today I reached my first 100 mitzvahs. I am very happy that this coincided with the date of my dad’s birthday. I felt that he would be thrilled to know that my project is in full swing at this time. Also, I know he would be happy to see how many things I have already learned through the project.

I have had more than one person tell me that I am probably not counting as many things as I really should. At the current rate I am going, it might take me 2 years to complete this project, so I may begin to count additional things that in the past I had not included. For example, whenever I attend synagogue I usually put money in the tzedakah box. I will now start recording that.

I also thought it would be fun to review the first 100 mitzvahs. How many of them took less than 5 minutes? How many of them cost money? How many were just my time? I will need sometime to review the list, but I will be sure to record the results as soon as I can.

Now onto mitzvahs….

98) Attended morning services and left money in the tzedakah box.

99) Donated money in memory of a congregant who died at our synagogue yesterday.

100&101) Picked up an item for auction number 2 that I am now procuring items for. In addition, made several phone calls to follow up with donors.

102) A local hair salon that I had gotten the item from asked to have our school advertise an event for Locks of Love that she is offering for our community. I brought the information to our school for approval. I would love to be part of helping children and adults give to this neat charity.

103) Volunteered at the school for a before spring break event.

104) The final mitzvah for today was really one someone did for me before I could do one for him.

I recieved a gift certificate from a local Jewish store in thanks for my help with the school auction. I had wanted to use the certificate to get a present for our hosts for Passover next week. I had tried to stop by the store the last few days but had missed the open hours. I actually saw the owner walking home today after I picked up the kids. I pulled over and explained the situation. He told me he would be happy to reopen the store if I could drive him home afterwards. So his mitzvah was the prelude to my mitzvah.

Ones I gave and ones I received

85) Gave a D’var Torah – a brief commentary on that week’s Torah reading – this week at synagogue. This week would have been my father’s 71st birthday and I felt I wanted to do this as a tribute to him, it was both cleansing for me and something I am glad I decided to do.

86) Sunday – Ran a last minute errand for the auction.

87) Sunday, Aaron and I attended our son’s school auction, we donated to the “mitzvah moments” a time when you can donate to the school. We were happy to have a chance to give more than we have in the past during this time.
88) Called a friend to encourage her to do a volunteer job she had told me she wanted to do. I ended up at the place she wanted to volunteer and asked for the phone number to make sure she had it.

89) Helped a friend, took her daughter to school for her.

This weekend, I felt especially grateful to two friends and their families who did mitzvahs to help Aaron and I. The first one helped watch my son so that I was able to participate fully in my synagogue services. Her son and husband took care of him and I was so appreciative of their help.

Second, another friend helped us when we had a medical emergency and needed some coverage with the children. Without hesitation, she volunteered to help out. I am grateful and thankful to have friends that take the time to do mitzvahs for us.

Auction and clothing

74) Asked a friend if she knew anyone who could use some children’s clothing that I was planning to donate. She took them for someone she had in mind.

75) Donated large unused toy that my son had never opened to our school auction.

76) Was asked to get a special donation item for the auction, procured it after school today.

Mitzvahs from last week 44, 45 and 46

It has been several days since I had a chance to blog and I was feeling badly about that. I was thinking I haven’t really done that many mitzvahs in the past couple of days. Then I remembered that last week I spent two days volunteering at school. Had lunch with my daughter at school both days. On Friday, I made calls to check in with everyone I knew who wasn’t feeling well to see how they were feeling and let them know I was thinking about them. Then I spent a couple of hours working on soliciting auction items for my kids two schools. After that I cleaned and cooked dinner so we could have a wonderful family meal together on Friday night.

When I last saw the Rebbetzin she told me that anytime you are doing anything for someone else it counts as a mitzvah. So I guess I really was doing some mitzvahs last week even if I didn’t think so. I will count atleast the volunteering at school, calls for the auction and mitzvahs calls as part of my count. That’s 44, 45 and 46.
